I think the world has heard just about enough - about the military dictatorship that rules the country known as North Korea....

We all live rather well here in North America, for the most part -most of us have meals, a place to sleep and even freedom, something that just does not exist in North Korea.

Anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 people are
prisoners in North Korea. Six labour camps. Concentration camps is a better word. Truly known as a gulag style, no exit political prison system.

One man did escape. His name is now known to the world as Shin Dong-hyuk and he now travels and speaks out about North Korea. How for example the prisons were set up to basically scare the living hell out of the people of North Korea and eliminate those who are perceived to be wrong-doers.

One such wrong doer was apparently a little six year old girl who so badly wanted some nourishment that she brought with her to school
two kernels of corn.Yes, thats right, two kernels of corn. The teacher found out about the two kernels of corn and called the police. She was beaten and later died. And that was the crime for this little angel - the possession of two kernels of corn.
Does this horrific story not touch your heart - well it certainly touched mine. And I just hope that Shin
Dong-hyuk continues to speak out about this outrageous and senseless treatment given a child...
An innocent child! Just a hungry little girl...

But then again, we all know that North Korea is run by a military dictatorship. And these goons obviously do not have a heart- to treat a child this way.

If you buy and read no other book, pick up a copy of Escape from Camp 14 by Shin Dong-hyuk, published by Pan McMillan.
