Just as we prepare our vehicles for the cold months ahead with proper
tires, tune-up, etc.  its very important to prepare for a hike into the woods.
Many many books have been written about survival, preparation, and
proper gear - and yet, some still seem to forget all the essentials and
plod along with overconfidence....getting lost, injuried or facing death...

Most of us know that survival in the woods is possible. So many of the
fat black bears get a pretty good meal out of bugs. Moths. Mayflies,
even ants (though a little bitter) could be a question of survival vs death.

The slow moving porcupine could provide a good meal. As could
even lizards and snakes.

If you decide to make a journey into the beautiful rockies you should
tell a friend about your plans and intended route. A warm jacket and
proper footwear can't do any harm. Also there are specific survival
packages that contain some dry foods as well as first aid and even some
odds and ends that prove to be very useful.

And this being berry season up here in Canada - a great opportunity to
find saskatoons, blueberries, and my favorite, the low bush cranberry.

Folks often return from an adventure in the woods both invigorated and
motivated to return. But in order to return you need to have survived
the initial trip, you need to be aware of the elements, a sudden snowstorm,
a rockslide. Perhaps you need a special kit for any allergies...

And remember that song...If you go out in the woods today....well, in the event
you do, take the time to be well prepared. A healthy and fit individual has a
better chance against all the possible dangers of survival in the woods
and yet its often some of the healthy and fit persons that seem to get lost
so you should know where you are going, what you are getting into and
both a map and compass are useful as well. But mostly its our preparation.
Happy hiking!
