The US government only profits if we are sick. The health insurance and pharmaceutical industry pay lots of money to the government, so as long as they are making money from this, then health insurance and pills will be designed to keep people sick longer and alive so that they can take more drugs. What we need is to petition our government to make herbal medicine legal. Of course that is not a profitable endeavor, but it will save lives.

There are so many issues involved with this that it is hard to find a way to solve a problem that is deeper than health care. This is about our belief in what health means. And we need to look at every possibility, herbal medicine has always been part of a healthful lifestyle until we decided a quick fix was better than health. I applaud your effort to educate us on this.

I have been away and coming back to find this kind of dialogue is delightful. As with any of the issues we face it is the ability to look beyond the obvious, to ask questions and each find a piece of the solution that moves us forward into change and transformation.

I am a family physician in Canada, and while our system isn't perfect, it more-or-less works - for everyone.

I hope I am wrong, but I do not believe that American citizens will ever enjoy universal health care. I share your opinion that caring for the sick should not be confused with a "business" - however, now that the sick are a source of profit, I believe there will be no turning back. HMOs are among the most powerful corporations in America, and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the debate on universal healthcare remains just that - a debate, and nothing more.

While I admire the comment made from Richard Chasse, and I agree that we can do much to ward off sickness through diet, the fact remains that, with rare exceptions, ALL of us will require health care at some point in time. We are a culture so focused on youth, that we turn away when we see an elderly person, or someone infirm; we think, "that's not me, I'll never be like that." And yet, not so long from now, we WILL be that person - perhaps not sick, but old definitely (God-willing)!

We want to believe that if we "do the right thing" - eat the right foods, take the right supplements, think the right way - we will stay well forever. People are forever criticizing doctors as mere "pill-pushers" so hear this - I DO believe these things make a difference! But sadly, in my line of work, I see people who "did everything right" and still got sick. The person with lung cancer who never smoked. The marathon runner who gets diabetes.

So, yes, we should all eat well and explore our individual road to wellness. But Anita's point stands without "needing more research to provide better value" - the value in her message, as I understand it, is that sick people should be treated with an eye to compassion, not consumerism. Surely, there is something quite predatory about "taking the opportunity" to profit from someone else's misfortune; to plan for such profit is worse than opportunistic, and reminds me of that great quote, that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.

Good question to ask. Real. Down to the basic issue...yet in a sort of complainer mood. It is easy to do, however, the real leaders have some kind of solution (answers) in mind when posting in this style. There are many new (for western culture) discoveries in foods to allow wellness and avoid the sickness industry altogether. Nutritionist have now discovered and labeled 10-Superfoods that provide the human body optimum nutrition to do what the body was designed to do (yes, designed); and consumption of these (or at least one) will become part of your regular menu.

Your body was designed to destroy (via your T-killer cells...immune system) every fungus, bacteria, virus and loose cancer cells! IF, the system is not busy fighting low-grade inflammation throughout the body due to processed, boxed and corporate farmed foods which create an acidic body state, rather than an alkaline state which the body prefers. After 14 months of changing my diet and drinking the # 1 Superfood on a regular basis, my wife & I have a tremendous wellness story.....love to share if interested. Thanks for reading this comment. You are on the right track with your questions, just need some moor research to provide better value. Keep at it. Get in touch if you would. @RichardChasse

The basic premise is that everyone pays around 5% of thier taxable income into a fund which is used to pay for mecial costs. If you dont earn any income then you dont pay the levy.

I'm a little ignorant of the USA system but some of the rumors Ive heard do concern me.... No one system is perfect, but I agree with Ann - we should be helping everyone, not just those that can afford it.

Healing for everyone. But at what cost?
A two tier system where the rich pay a little and the poor pay a lot?
A system that thrives on investment in a health plan? Or as Ann writes:
our economy needs us to support the business of being sick...
