Sometimes we can't see the forest because the trees are in the way. We don't always see a blessing for what it is until something happens that kind of smacks us in the face.

Six years ago, my life changed forever. I learned I had a progressive and very serious lung disease. I had to give up a career I loved and it broke my heart.

Five years ago, my youngest daughter spent almost a year away from home so she could be at her infant's daughter's side as doctors fought to keep her alive. Because I couldn't work, I was able to move into their home to care for their 6 year old son so his father could return to work. With a mother far from home and his tiny sister so sick, Johnny had needs far above making sure he had clean clothes on or had brushed his teeth. By the time I went back home, our relationship was changed forever.

Because I got sick, I have been able to spend hours with my 3 small grandsons. I've been able to have the time to hunt for interesting rocks, toss a football back and forth and read piles of books to them.

Because I got sick, I have the time to teach my 2 little granddaughters how to sew and embroider, how to knit and crochet. I've been able to experience the thrill of teaching them what I taught their mother, so many years ago.

Instead of cursing the darkness, I chose to look for blessing and I found many. Life is good. It may not be what I had planned but life is good.
